It's all about the right attitude

Here are some tips to increase your chances of being viewed as a valuable employee:

Do's
• Bring a positive attitude to work with you and be the friendly and considerate kind of person that people like to be around without overdoing it.
• Be a good listener, endeavoring to understand what your supervisor really wants you to do.
• Ask questions to make sure you understand what is expected of you.
• Prioritize your work, and ask your supervisor if you are not sure or if you have conflicting priorities.
• Show a willingness to take additional tasks over and above your job description (within reason).
• Be punctual and stay late if necessary in order to meet a deadline.
• Turn off your personal mobile phone while you are at work.
• Show respect to your boss and colleagues.

Don’ts
• Don’t be negative, overbearing and a “high maintenance” person (difficult to manage).
• Don’t get caught up in petty office politics and gossip.
• Don’t criticize the way the company does things.
• Don’t bring your personal life into the office.
• Don’t take or make personal phone calls at work.
• Don’t check your personal e-mail, surf the net.


When the cutbacks happen managers will naturally try to keep the best employees; those that have demonstrated respect and commitment to the company and that can do the job. They also look to keep those that they enjoy having around; employees who have a positive approach. My advice is to go out of your way to be that kind of employee.
